The Sport
More Than a Game
Rugby is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the United States — and for good reason. It combines the excitement of football, the endurance of soccer, and the teamwork of basketball into one dynamic, inclusive sport.
Unlike many sports where only a few players touch the ball, rugby puts every player in the action. Every kid on the field matters. Every position is critical. That's what makes rugby such a powerful tool for youth development.
At the NE Wisconsin Rugby Foundation, we've seen firsthand how rugby transforms young people — building confidence, discipline, and friendships that last a lifetime. Rugby also opens doors for kids' future. Players have gone on to play rugby collegiately, many in D1 programs. Local players have also attended and traveled with the US National Team's developmental programs.
The Benefits
Rugby requires every player on the field to work together. There are no spectators on a rugby team — every position is essential, and every player must contribute. Kids learn quickly that the team succeeds or fails together.
Rugby offers multiple formats for all ages and skill levels — from non-contact flag rugby for beginners to full tackle for experienced players. The sport welcomes athletes of all sizes, speeds, and backgrounds.
Rugby teaches kids to stay composed under pressure, make quick decisions, and bounce back from setbacks. The mental resilience built on the rugby field carries into the classroom and beyond.
Rugby develops speed, strength, agility, and endurance. Players run, pass, catch, and tackle — engaging the whole body in a dynamic, exciting way that keeps kids active and healthy.
Rugby has a deep tradition of respect — for teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials. The post-game handshake and shared meal are hallmarks of the sport's culture of sportsmanship.
Rugby players form bonds that last a lifetime. The NE Wisconsin rugby community is a family — parents, coaches, and players who support each other on and off the field for years to come.
